5 Terrible Side Effects of Drinking Diet Soda
Believe it or not, the biggest source of calories for Americans is not white bread or Big Macs, it’s soda. Almost every American drinks about two soda cans every single day. But It’s DIET soda – you say, without sugar or calories, so it’s the perfect choice for weight loss… Right?
Not so fast. Even diet soda has its own set of side effects that will definitely harm your health – it might cause kidney problems and will eventually add a few inches to your waistline. It is important to know the following side effects so you might as well leave the soda can for good.
It’s not a well-known fact, but it’s true: diet soda is bad for your kidney. In recent research at the Harvard Medical School, where more than 3,000 women participated, researchers found that diet soda increases the risk for kidney deterioration. Researchers believe that the diet sweeteners are responsible for causing kidney problems, and those problems were not associated with sugar-sweetened sodas.
According to one study in 2008, where more than 10,000 adults participated in the University of Minnesota, believe it or not, if you consume even just one single diet soda a day, the chances of metabolic syndrome can rise up to a 34%, including belly fat and high level of cholesterol that will eventually put you at risk for getting a heart disease.
There’s the painful truth: Diet soda actually doesn’t help you lose weight. A study at the HealthScienceCenter at the University of Texas found that the risk of becoming overweight is related to numbers of cans a person drink in one day. Consuming just two or more cans a day may increase your waistlines by 500%. And here is the explanation: these kind of artificial sweeteners really disrupts the ability of the body to regulate any calorie intake based on the sweetness, meaning that people who consume the so called diet foods can easily overeat, because eventually their body is being tricked into thinking it’s going to consume sugar, that’s why they crave more.
Diet soda is very acidic because of the pH 3.2. Just because it’s a diet soda doesn’t make it acid light, and the acid is what really dissolves enamel. A University of Michigan’s study found that people who drink three, four or more sodas a day have worse dental health. It also found that diet drinkers had greater decay, more fillings and more missing teeth.
Most regular sodas don’t contain mold inhibitors, but this is an important part of the diet soda. They are in nearly all diet sodas and by the names potassium benzoate or sodium benzoate. Bad news for diet drinkers… But many regular sodas don’t contain this preservative, like Coke and Pepsi.
Peter Piper, a professor of molecular biology at the University of Sheffield in the U.K., in 1999 told a British newspaper that these chemicals have the power to cause severe damage to DNA in the mitochondria to the point that they totally inactivate it. According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, the preservative has also been linked to asthma, hives and other allergic conditions.
