Later on, bladders can go either way: many work better once a heavy uterus is gone, and a smaller number develop new leaking. Both are treatable. Not being able to pass urine at all is an emergency. Urine running out continuously with no urge needs a same-day call.
Pelvic rest after a hysterectomy means nothing goes in your vagina while the top of it heals: no sex, no tampons, no douching. Most instructions say six weeks; some run longer. The rule says nothing about orgasm or oral sex, so that question goes to your surgeon. And six weeks is the earliest the wait ends, not the day the healing does.
You can recover from a hysterectomy on your own. Someone has to drive you home, and someone should be in the house the first night at least. After that the job is groceries, bins, litter and laundry, and all of it can be set up before you go in. Tell the pre-admission clinic you live alone, then start the list.
You need far less than the shopping lists suggest. Most of the setup is moving what you already have to where you won’t bend or reach for it, and lining up help for the house. What you buy depends on your operation, and when the advice conflicts, the discharge sheet your own hospital gives you comes first.
A hysterectomy hospital bag needs far less in it than you think, and what goes in depends on one question to ask at pre-op: are you going home the same day, or staying? The short list is a phone charger, lip balm, your glasses case, pads and your own underwear. If your hospital or your doctor asks you to bring anything more specific, pack that too.
Overdoing it after a hysterectomy shows up late. Whatever you did felt fine at the time; the next morning you’re sore, out of energy and short-tempered. Do less than you did yesterday, and it passes. Bleeding heavier than spotting, a fever, or pain your painkillers can’t reach means you call now, don’t wait.

Two documents came out of your hysterectomy. The operative report is your surgeon’s account of the operation, written right after it. The pathology report comes later, from a doctor you never met, after a lab examined what was removed. Both can be requested from the hospital in Canada, the US, and the UK. Here’s how, and what the words mean.
There’s a wait for a reason, and everyone will hand you a different number for it: UK guidance says at least four to six weeks, US guidance often runs six to twelve. If your cervix came out, clearance is about the top of the vagina healing closed. The first time often hurts, and can be drier, and can hit you emotionally. Long-term, it can go either way: better for some, worse for others.
Preparation starts the day you book, not the week before. The two biggest pieces aren’t calendar items at all: settling exactly what’s being removed and getting it written down, and lining up the help you’ll need at home. Everything else is a short list, most of it for the last two weeks.
